At BASScare, we worry about what’s being reported about the new Support at Home program – because sometimes, it’s simply wrong.
Even for those of us working in aged care every day, this reform is complex and still evolving. Support at Home isn’t a small adjustment; it’s a complete redesign of how aged care at home will work across Australia. It affects assessments, funding and how services are planned and delivered. With so many changes still being refined, it’s easy for important details to be missed or misinterpreted – and that’s when misinformation spreads quickly.
We recently had a client call us after hearing that physiotherapy would now be free. Not quite. Under Support at Home, physiotherapy won’t attract a co-contribution – it will be fully covered through government subsidies. That’s a positive change, but not the same as being “free.”
The truth is, the details behind this reform are complicated and full of fine print. It’s easy to oversimplify or get it wrong, especially when trying to sum it up in a short article or headline.
And of course, media outlets often focus on what sounds dramatic, not what’s accurate. Words like “free”, “cuts,” “crisis,” or “confusion” grab attention — but they rarely paint the full picture.
Support at Home providers across Australia have spent the past year taking in all the new information from the Government, making the necessary changes. At BASScare, we’ve been preparing carefully behind the scenes to make sure our clients experience a smooth transition and continue receiving the care and support they rely on.
If you’re unsure what’s true, ask your provider.
If you already receive home care, your Care Partner can explain how the changes affect you. And if you’re just starting to think about your future care, please reach out. We’re more than happy to answer your questions and help you make sense of what’s coming. You don’t need to keep track of every update yourself – that’s our job.
Change on this scale always brings questions and a bit of uncertainty, but it also brings the chance to make things better. At BASScare, we’re taking a steady, informed approach – guided by our experience and our commitment to the people we support.
We’ve managed reforms before, and we’ll manage this one too – with the same focus we’ve always had: helping people live well at home, with care they can trust and rely on.
