When most people think of dementia, they picture someone much older—in their 80s or 90s, maybe slowing down or forgetting names. But for thousands of Australians, dementia strikes much earlier: in their 40s, 50s, or even as young as their 30s. This is called Younger Onset Dementia (YOD), and while it’s talked about less, its effects are devastating and often isolating.
It’s a common myth that dementia is only an issue for older people. But the numbers tell a different story. In 2025, an estimated 29,000 Australians are living with Younger Onset Dementia. Without serious action, this number could jump to around 41,000 by 2054. That means more individuals and their families will face the immense challenges of dementia during what should be the prime of their lives.
At BASScare, we believe visibility matters. When conditions like YOD stay hidden, those affected often feel unseen too. That’s why we’re bringing this under-recognised condition into the light.
One of the biggest hurdles for Younger Onset Dementia is the silence surrounding it. Many people with YOD feel isolated not just by the condition, but because society simply doesn’t expect dementia to happen to younger individuals. Early signs like forgetfulness, brain fog and confusion are often dismissed as stress, menopause or medication side effects. This leads to delayed diagnoses and a concerning knowledge gap in primary care.
By raising awareness, we can change this. We can encourage conversations in workplaces, schools and communities. We can push for better medical understanding, educate to break stereotypes, and create support that truly fits younger people.
BASScare’s Maranoa Club is dedicated to supporting people living with YOD, helping them live fulfilling lives while offering crucial breaks and support for their carers. It was founded on the belief that life after a diagnosis can still be rich and fulfilling. Opened in 2020, the Club provides a space where people with YOD can find connection, community and shared purpose.
From walks and visits to local cafés to art, music, puzzles, gardening, cooking and excursions—the Club is all about embracing challenges, staying active and feeling less alone.
At BASScare, we’re proud to be leading the charge in conversations about Younger Onset Dementia. Through the Maranoa Club, we’re creating a place where those living with YOD can stay social, stay active and support each other.
We invite you to join us in spreading awareness and challenging misconceptions. There are countless stories that reveal the often-misunderstood reality of living with younger onset dementia. It’s time we listened—and responded—with greater awareness, empathy and support.
