Bass Care: Embracing Community Care

VolunteerVolunteer

The volunteer spirit formed the core of the development of Boroondara Aged Services Society. BASS Care, (then known as the Canterbury Centre), began with a Christmas party in 1956 organised by a committee of local people. These dedicated people from the Combined Christian churches perceived that there were many elderly folk in their community who needed fellowship, support and, in some case, sustenance and housing; the realisation of their vision was only possible due to the work of hundreds of people, who have cheerfully given their time and efforts to it’s success and the Centre stands today as their permanent memorial.

Today, at BASS Care, volunteers still form an integral part of the organisation - over 300 dedicated volunteers work side by side with paid staff to ensure a quality service to more than 1300 clients.

How do I become a Volunteer for BASS Care?

Our Volunteers are involved in many activities including:

  • delivering Meals on Wheels;
  • serving lunch and offering friendship every day in our community Dining Rooms
  • providing companionship to our residential clients;
  • accompanying clients on our organised day trips;
  • providing transport;
  • assisting with shopping and banking;
  • participating in Arts, Crafts and Music programs;
  • assisting staff at our specialised dementia day care centre, Maranoa House;
  • helping at our Faversham House kiosk;

The list is endless and new ideas are always welcome.

Why Volunteer?

Many volunteers find their participation in these areas enriching and rewarding. There is an opportunity to share skills and develop new ones, whilst helping members of the community.

Volunteering provides opportunities to:

  • Meet new people and make new friends
  • Learn more about your local community and the needs of people living in Boroondara
  • Enjoy great rewards by participating in your community
  • Make a real difference
