Faversham House

Located in Shierlaw Avenue, Canterbury, and completed in July 2006, Faversham House and its Hamer Wing provide full accommodation services for 112 low level care residents and 44 high level care residents, facilitating ageing in place. The main building of Faversham House is a two storey building with the lower level rooms for low level care and a secured second floor for high level care. Respite care is also available for low level care. The Hamer Wing is a separate single storey building located next door, accommodating low level care residents.

Eden Alternative™

What is the Eden Alternative™?
The core concept of The Eden Alternative is strikingly simple. We must teach ourselves to see places where Elders live as habitats for human beings rather than facilities for the frail and elderly. We must learn what Mother Nature has to teach us about vibrant, vigorous living.

The Eden Alternative™ is a different model of providing residential aged care that seeks to modify the care environment for elders.

The Eden Alternative™ has identified the three plagues; Loneliness, Helplessness and Boredom as the main causes of suffering for elders in an aged care environment.

The Eden Alternative™ seeks to eliminate these three plagues by changing the physical and social environment of an aged care facility.

A blending together of community and community care

Faversham House is designed to blend in with the existing neighbourhood houses and streetscape, creating a very welcoming, home like atmosphere. The two storey building consists of a number of wings set around communal dining and living areas to accommodate resident communities in accordance with our commitment to the Eden Alternative aged care philosophy. The living rooms located in each wing have tea and coffee making facilities and outdoor patio areas set amongst the landscaped garden areas, providing an enhanced outlook for residents and recreation throughout the grounds.

All bedrooms in Faversham House and the Hamer Wing have an ensuite, are air conditioned and have access to telephone, internet and cable television connections.

The Hamer Wing of Faversham House (previously Chatham Lea Hostel) is situated in pleasant surroundings opposite a park in Chatham Road, Canterbury. This single storey building was completely refurbished in late 2006 and is surrounded by attractive, established gardens.
